While you...

I've gone through many times where it has been a struggle to get a decent meal on the table... beyond just spaghetti and meatballs, that is. There's so much to get done, and not always a lot of time to do it in.

But one day I got to thinking as I dealt with my toddler son as I tried to make dinner. He was feeling very clingy, and trying to cook when he did not want his father and did not want to be put down was hard.

So I started thinking of ways to involve him.

I'd done the same with my daughter, although she hadn't been quite so clingy. But even at 2 years old she loved to help in the kitchen. Tearing lettuce was a particular favorite, something she could do without much help from me. Who cared if the pieces of lettuce were either huge or miniscule? I got time to cook without worrying about her.

I came up with several solutions to cooking
with small children underfoot.

Now, despite the title of this site and the ebook, I never, ever do any actual cooking, chopping and so forth with a child in my arms. We all know that's not safe. And most cooking does require two hands. This is more about getting around the distractions that tempt a parent to try it with only one arm available.

I figured out how to spread out my efforts so that I could minimize the times that I had to cook with the kids around, and learned what I could safely allow them to help me with.

It's been a delight. Less stressful for all of us, and I still get to make really wonderful meals.
